The mosque of Banda Aceh on Sumatra Island is one of the most well-known mosques in Southeast Asia. It was built in 1879 and has been extended repeatedly. The last extension was the minaret which was completed in 1995. In the course of the Tsunami disaster of 2004, the building was severely damaged. However, it was virtually the only building in that area that remained standing. The model is a present by the Governor of Aceh and was designed by Indonesian model makers.
