Perched atop a steep, 150 m high limestone crag, Hochosterwitz castle dominates the gently undulating countryside for miles around. Belligerent tribes passing through the country were successfully warded off by the impregnable fortress and not even the Turks were able to conquer this stronghold. And thus it has retained its great historical importance from its very early days right down to the present. Owned by the princely family of Khevenhüller since the 16th century, Hochosterwitz castle is one of the main tourist attractions in Carinthia today. The model was completed in 1959 and is thus the oldest model on the site. Due to the size of the original a scale of 1:50 was chosen, explaining why the model is only half the size of all the other models (1:25).
